MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS, MOROCCO
From the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Manbel Berbère was created over 10 years ago. With a focus on sustaining the history of rug making, this organization's mission is to provide a better means of living for artisans in the Berber villages. Manbel Berbère represents several rug makers between the Middle Atlas region to the South of Morocco. With expertise in working with artisans, Manbel Berbère understands the importance of quality craftsmanship and the importance of sustaining traditional culture.
The founder, Uncle Joe (as we call him), is a true Berber himself from the Middle Atlas Mountains and started this cooperative as a way for Berber craftspeople to showcase their designs and earn an income. We spent several days with Uncle Joe, learning the craft of rug making and the level of patience and preciseness that was involved with each creation. Taking anywhere between two weeks to six months to make one single rug, this craft is certainly a labor of love.
Manbel Berbère is committed to a sustainable future through the practice of these core values.
LOCAL RAW MATERIALS
Only locally sourced, raw materials are used in the process of rug making - sheep wool, camel wool, and organic cotton. All materials can be traced to its original animal and cotton plant in the Middle Atlas Region.
PRODUCT DESIGN + INNOVATION
Artisans are empowered through their own design creations and encouraged to innovate and transform traditional Berber patterns into modern designs.
Manbel Berbère is committed to decreasing their energy usage by sourcing local materials to minimize transportation usage, and minimize the amount of water consumption during the rug-making process.
